Yangtze Agreement 1900

The open door policy – first launched in 1899 with a follow-up book in 1900 – was important to the US attempt to establish an international protocol of equal privileges for all countries trading with China and to support China`s territorial and administrative integrity. Politics was a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy in East Asia until the mid-20th century. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fluxes from land to sea in the Yang States watershed were simulated for the period 1900-2010 by combining models for hydrology, nutrient input to surface water and retention in the watercourse. This study shows that basin-wide nutrient balance, surface water supply and retention in the stream increased during this period. Since 2004, the Three Gorges Reservoir has contributed 5% and 7% to retention at the N and P basins, respectively. With the dramatic increase in nutrient intake, even this additional retention was not sufficient to prevent an increase in river exports from 337 Gg N year−1 and 58 Gg P year−1 (molar ratio N:P = 13) to 5896 Gg N year−1 and 381 Gg P year−1 (molar ratio N:P = 35) to the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea (ECSYS). The intermediate and upstream sub-basins dominate N and P exports to ECSYS respectively due to various human activities along the river. Our spatially explicit allocation of nutrient sources can help strategically align nutrient reduction strategies. We postulate that these should focus on improving the efficiency of the use of agricultural fertilizers and manure upstream and in the middle of the course and on better management of municipal wastewater in the downstream sub-basin. Open Door Policy, a policy statement initiated by the United States in 1899 and 1900 to protect equal privileges among countries that trade with China and to support China`s territorial and administrative integrity. The statement was issued in the form of circulars sent by US Secretary of State John Hay to the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Russia.

The open door policy has been adopted almost everywhere in the United States and has been a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy in East Asia for more than 40 years. Hay did not ask for answers, but all the powers, except Japan, accepted these principles. The results indicate a 17-fold increase in N exports (7 times more P) over the period from 1900 to 2010. The spatio-temporal changes of the N and P sources in YRB were simulated for 1900-2010. The ratio of N/P exports to the coast increased from 13 in 1900 to 35 in 2010.
